Myotherapy

Myotherapy (muscular therapy) assesses muscular injury and dysfunction, applies various physical modalities to treat pain, and rehabilitates the soft tissue and underlying causes. Myotherapy treatment aims to improve muscular strength and flexibility and to decrease pain.
Myotherapy can be used for several injuries or conditions that result from strains, sprains, occupational, postural and recreational stresses, emotional stress, incorrect ergonomics, faulty biomechanics, muscular imbalances, traumatic or overuse injury or chronic neuromuscular or musculoskeletal illness or disease.

These underlying causes may have symptoms such as general aches and pains, headaches, neck or back pain, joint stiffness, neurological symptoms or reduced flexibility.

A Holistic Approach
Myotherapy consists of assessing, treating, and managing the pain associated with soft tissue injury and restricted joint mobility caused by myofascial or muscle dysfunction. It is a holistic approach to injury management as the whole body is considered and your specific issue.

We use specific soft tissue techniques such as deep tissue massage, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, stretching, dry needling, and heat therapies. Rehabilitation of the injury or condition can be done through exercise and/or stretching prescription and corrective advice.

An initial Myotherapy consultation will involve a brief medical history, presenting injury history, skeletal structure and postural assessment, range of movement testing, joint mobility, muscle strength and neurological testing, orthopaedic tests and a palpatory assessment.

When To See A Myotherapist
Myotherapy is applied in the rehabilitative, corrective and preventative phases of therapy to restore and maintain the normal integrity of the soft tissue structures (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia).

The aim of Myotherapy is to treat the cause as well as the symptoms of a wide range of conditions.

Pain or symptoms caused by muscle (myo) or fascia (connective tissue) are described as “myofascial”.

The cause of musculoskeletal pain and symptoms in many conditions is myofascial. It may originate from abnormal muscle contraction or trigger points in muscle or fascia.

These are often experienced by the individual as the feeling of ‘tightness’ or ‘knots’ within the muscles.
